Have Smartphone Sales Peaked?

In the following article charts from Statista.com looks at the Cell Phone sales situation as of the end of the 3rd quarter of 2018. At this point it looks like sales have leveled off but it is quite possible that people are simply waiting for the advent of the new 5G phone capability.~Tim McMahon, editor.

Have We Reached Peak Smartphone?

by ,

According to latest estimates from market research firm IDC, global smartphone shipments amounted to 355.2 million units in the third quarter of 2018, marking the fourth straight quarter of negative growth for the smartphone market. For the first nine months of 2018, global shipments added up to 1.03 billion units, down 3.6 percent from the same period last year.

With smartphone penetration reaching saturation levels in many regions and technological advances becoming rarer and less obvious to the average user, it was only a matter of time before the market reached this point. But have we reached the peak of the smartphone era yet? Or in other words: will things only go downhill from here?

The market researchers at IDC don’t think so. Attributing the current slowdown at least partly to challenging conditions in the world’s largest smartphone market, China, IDC expects the global market to return to modest growth in 2019 before the introduction of 5G devices will drive further growth until 2022.

Android’s Rise to Smartphone OS Dominance

by ,
Ten years ago, on September 23, 2008, the T-Mobile G1 made its debut, marking the birth hour of Android. More than a year after Apple had released the first iPhone, Android’s debut wasn’t as spectacular and, as opposed to the iPhone, the first Android device still had a physical keyboard. But Google’s open approach to building a mobile platform quickly proved to be successful and it took less than three years for Android to become the number 1 platform in the booming smartphone market.

As the following chart illustrates, much of the smartphone market’s exponential growth over the past decade was driven by Android devices, with sales surpassing one billion for the first time in 2014. According to Gartner, worldwide sales of Android smartphones amounted to 1.3 billion units last year, which is equivalent to 86 percent market share for Google’s mobile operating system.
